By R. Sweeney
Great price and for a product with a long proven reliabilty. Just don't expect the impact to take off lug nuts...

I use mine daily as a mechanic and the portability saves me time everyday.

I bought this in place of what my Snap-On man had offered. His deal was just a 3/8 impact and 2 batteries and charger for $287. & tax

I mainly use 3/8 sockets with an adapter 1/2 to 3/8. getting all the extras of this combo made for a sweet deal as all the guys at the shop paid over $300 for just the impact, batteries and charger. I keep the light and drill at home and they are great around the house.

We've come a long way from sweat and a screwdriver. A hundred years ago, builders would never have envisioned a tool as powerful and efficient as this one. Heck, even 20 years ago. Science has ushered battery technology along, and the LXT Lithium-Ion system that powers this impact driver has a ton of advantages over standard NiMH or NiCad batteries. The Lithium-Ion technology means 1,400 battery life cycles, longer run time, lighter weight, a great reduction in the self-discharge rate and built-in shock-absorbing features to protect your battery.

But perhaps the coolest innovation is what Makita calls its 45-minute Optimum Charger. It actually talks to the batteries it charges throughout the cycle, using a built-in memory chip in the battery and, believe it or not, a CPU chip in the charger itself, which analyzes the data stored in the battery chip to decide on the best charging method at that time.

The drill/driver itself is fairly compact and lightweight, weighing in at less than 5 pounds, yet it's packing a powerful 560 in./lbs. of torque. It's got a super speed range of 0 to 300 rpm in low gear, 0 to 600 in mid-range and 0 to 1,700 rpm in top gear. Sometimes, you may encounter a little resistance if you're switching directly from low gear to high; if that happens, running the tool in mid-gear for a couple seconds completely alleviates any snag.

Makita's always made ergonomically positive tools that feel good in your hand and take the strain off your body, and this one's no exception. The slightly curved grip is so comfortable, and the auxiliary handle gives you supreme control. And because it's super compact and lightweight, this driver's an absolute pleasure to work with - even overhead. --Kris Jensen-Van Heste

 "preliminary disappointment" 2010-05-06
By Charles Seabrook (NJ)
I am a little disapponted that a $300 drill is made in China; I ordered the older 451 model over the 454 because I thought it was made in Japan. I'll have to get over it.

 "Transmission Problems" 2010-03-17
By S. Sooter (Newcastle, WA United States)
I have used three of the Makita BDF451s in my home furniture and cabinet business for three years now, and they are great drills to use. Just need to be a little tougher. I used to own a commercial cabinet shop and must have heavy-duty tools, as I demand a lot from them. I concur with what others have said about power, balance, the very helpful light, quick charge time, etc. But now, two of the three drills have developed transmission problems. The problem starts with 3rd gear (gears slipping, popping out of gear). Eventually, all gears are affected. The motors run just as powerfully as the day I bought them, and battery endurance is likewise still great. But the drills make horrible gear grinding sounds now, and power no longer gets to the chuck. I would give 5 stars if Makita made a tougher transmission.

The BDF451 is NOT a hammer drill... Amazon is using the specs for the BHP451 which is in fact a hammer drill.

 "Awesome tool" 2008-05-31
By Barry Boudreau (El Dorado Hills, CA USA)
I had the last generation Makita driver/drill and really enjoyed it, but the new ones are significantly improved. Solid driver action and long lasting battery. Charger is high quality with a built in cooling fan (the last gen charger would not recharge back-to-back without a cooling perios).

Ratchet could use a slightly higher level, but overall I'm completely satisfied...

"Have used for two months now..." 2008-04-11
By jg (OLNEY, MD United States)
I have a small home improvement business and needed a replacement for my aging (and battery eating) Dewalt 18v Ni-Cad drill.

Overall i am pretty pleased with this unit. It is very light, compact, powerful and has the basics onboard...like a drive tip clip, a belt loop, and lights. This is my first Lithium Ion tool and i am amazed mainly at how fast the batteries recharge. And I get a full day out of the two batteries in this kit as opposed to the Dewalt which would go through at least three before they ran down. To a point that i had to keep a Dewalt charger in the truck to keep me going. The Makitas will go all day and dont need to be charged until i get home at night.

I prefer this drill over the hammer drill version as it is a tad lighter and smaller (the chuck is a little shorter). I keep a hammer drill in the truck and had no need for duplication ...for something i only need 3-4 times a month.

Folks seem to automatically buy the hammer version but look at the size and weight before you do it. That little bit makes a difference when you are slinging these things around all day. And compared to the Dewalt? Wow...it's sooo much lighter.

I tested a new 18v Milwaukee Lithium-Ion drill. The thing is a beast and is a pleasure to use but the size and weight of that thing is bigger than the Dewalt. No thanks. It is not worth it.

As far as the drill operation itself. It is almost perfect. Some have complained about the speed switch getting stuck at the top which has happened to me maybe 4 times in two months of daily use. Who cares.

The Dewalt did the same thing on occasion. I had two of them and they both did it.

The power is rated very high (torque) and have had only a couple of occasions where it bogged driving 4" screws. Strangely, the Dewalt, which is rated lower, drove the screws the rest of the way. I might have had the torque/speed setting wrong on the Makita ...who knows.

Overall...i would recommend it to anyone...homeowner or contractor.

 "Sturdy and powerful" 2009-11-11
By D. Bernhard
This is an excellent broad-purpose corded-drill! It is sturdy and powerful. The chuck grips tightly, the trigger operates smoothly, the cord is long and flexible and the chuck key holder (attached to the cord) is handy. It's somewhat loud and heavy but those are acceptable tradeoffs for a drill that is so sturdy and powerful.

 "Great Drill" 2009-02-19
By Christopher Douglas (Maryville Missouri)
Not the lightest drill I have ever used, but it has got a lot of power and this is a substantial drill to have in the shop. It is compact and has a heck of a chuck on it. Great for all day long use, and it has plenty of power. I highly recommend this drill for applications where you wear out the charge on a cordless drill too quickly, it tears right through whatever you can throw at it, and does everything a standard drill should do without breaking a sweat.

 "rock solid l'il item" 2008-12-10
By Chambers Willy (Guam USA)
I'm not very much into keyless-chuck drills, and even less into cordless, so I bought this Makita 6402 as an all-around drill in my already-electrified shop. And when compared to, say, a similar Craftsman keyless-chuck 3/8 drill at half the price, what strikes me is the increased compactness or density of the Makita model. Also, the Makita's slower 1200 rpm would seem to be preferable since the black-oxide drill bits that are generally available these days are only rated to a maximum of 1500 rpm. My only gripe with this model has to do with the illustration as given here and elsewhere. An earlier model seems to be depicted, one that had a variable-speed dial built into trigger. Sadly, this is lacking in the currently-produced version that I received; although, I must confess, the variable speed trigger as supplied is very sensitive for low-speed drilling as needed. Also, a previous reviewer remarked that this drill was made in the USA. And while I appreciate and agree with his remarks as a whole, my own drill as received was made in Japan (although there's nothing wrong with this as far as I am concerned). Also preferable to the Milwaukee series as mentioned is the Makita 6402's more right-angled handle design. And the analogous 9 amp Hitachi model does indeed seem better-suited as a 1/2 drill, rather than 3/8. So let's hear it for Makita's maintaining a realistic balance between the motor and tool weight/dimensions.

"A Great All Around Drill" 2008-03-16
By Robert J. Marzinotto (Connecticut, U.S.A.)
This is one great drill. I was looking for a good basic drill for work in the shop, for general drilling and driving screws[witout constantly changing batteries] and this Makita more than fits the bill. Not too big,not too small. I already have a 1/2" Porter-Cable, a Porter-Cable hammer drill, a Milwaukee hole shooter, as well as a Makita cordless. However the one I reach for most is the 6402. It's just the right size, not too heavy and has good balance, and plenty of power. Say what you want about keyless chucks, they are a great convience, but give me a keyed chuck anyday. It only takes a few seconds more and a little effort. But they are the only ones that really lock the bit tight. Nothing more frustrating than to have constantly tighten up the chuck. Ive used it to drill and drive screws, and have put hole saws on it as well, and used a 1" forstner bit, and it has worked effortlessly, and it does not slip either. The reverse switch is in a good spot on the bottom, does not get in the way. No woodworker/handyman's tool box is complete without a Makita 6402. Its not the biggest, the baddest or the most powerful drill out there. But if you are looking for a great all around drill, the Makita 6402 is for you.[And the battery never seems to die just when you need it most] I almost bought a Milwaukee 3/8" drill. Its a super drill, but the size and weight are just like a 1/2" : kind of like a 1/2" drill disguised to look like a 3/8". A great drill, but I already have a 1/2", I dont need 2. Give this a workbench test drive, I doubt you will be disappointed. Ohh, did I forget to mention, its made in U.S.A.!! How many tools can you say that about today?

"A good drill at a good price" 2009-10-09
By D. Wing (Coloma, MI United States)
I had purchased the Mikita Impact Driver with the same batteries that this drill uses. The batteries last and charge quickly. Since I use these two tools around the house, having two batteries between the impact and the drill works out fine.

The one thing I have encountered (not sure it is severe enough to call it a complaint) is the grip on the chuck. The chuck is ribbed with small ridges. When tightening the chuck the drill is powerfull enough to spin the chuck in your hand and a couple times I have burned my hand from the friction.

Other than this very small "nit" the drill is great.

This product was brand-new, very nice. Great tool as well. I have the impact driver mate to this tool, they both are excellent. The seller was very quick to respond. The only thing I did not understand about the purchase was why it took almost 2 weeks to receive the drill, for probably a $1 more I should have been able to have it overnighted. It didn't matter to me though because I didn't need to have it right away.
