Have 2 that I use for weekend projects. They get used at least once a week. Great for small projects and the weight is a noticable difference between it and the BL1830. Great for attic work or rooftop or overhead projects. Have owned for 2 years and haven't noticed the drop in the ability to hold a charge.
If you are doing a deck or roofing etc. then get the BL1830. For smaller projects, the BL1815 works great.

I have no clue what you people are talking about. I purchased the impact, drill package from Amazon. I use both of these tools daily. I mean every day. My set is 3 years old now and still going strong. There's nothing wrong with my batteries.

I have 2 Makita Lithium Ion Drill/Driver sets. I have had both of them for over 2 years. I am not sure if the people writing these reviews are home users or not. I am a professional cabinetmaker and use these drills and drivers 10 hrs every day. I have three batteries for the tool I use at work and 2 for the one I use at home. I like the fact that you can leave these batteries in the charger and they stay charged. I am very hard on these tools as they have to perform for me on a daily basis. I have not had to replace any of the batteries until now. One of the batteries finally gave up after 2 years of hard work. These tools are meant to be used and are not designed to sit around for home use. I have been doing cabinet work for over 20 years and have had many cordless drills and impact drivers. This unit is as good as any I have owned. I have confidence in the batteries and will replace them with confidence. If you home users want to buy a cordless drill, stick with the ni-cad.

I have not had any issues with this battery. I did call Makita and they informed me that they had a bad batch earlier and have corrected the problem with the newer ones.

We tried some Makita tools after mostly buying Dewalt, and having used them for over a year now I feel I can right an honest review. What I am reading from most other users here is true, these batteries have to be replaced very often.
I think the problem here is both the Battery and the charger. Makita claims their charger can charge these batteries in 15-30 minutes..which is pretty fast. But I beleive when you charge a batter that fast, you are putting it though a lot of stress and/or heat, which will reduce the overall life of the battery. Put that together with the fact that while this is Lithium battery, it is an 'older' formula a lithium (similar to the chemical formula used in cell phones and laptops...items that do not drain the battery as much as a power tool), and these batteries lasted us less than a year. (under the same ammount of use, our one Milwaukee drill had its batter last about 3-4 months longer..and our DeWalt tools with their compact NICAD batteries last about twice as long as this.)
