"surprising power from compact drill - needs keyless chuck" 2010-04-01
By Peter Mitchell
I use a 18 volt cordless drill most of the time but there are situations where a corded drill can provide a lot more extended power than any tool powered by batteries. With the new lithium-ion batteries the safety overload protection limits peak power even more and a 3/8" corded drill provides much better performance and costs half as much as an additional lithium-ion battery.

I use the Makita in tight spaces where the small size and right angle drill head are a big help. When the drill stalls it is also a lot easier to control than a big stud drill and a lot less dangerous. I use it mostly to cut 8-1/4" holes in TJI for duct runs using one of the Hole Pro hole cutters.

Hole Pro X-230 Kit: 1-7/8" to 9" Infinitely Adjustable Twin Blade Hole Saw Cutter 3" 4" 5" 6" 7" 8" 9" Hole Wood Sheetrock Plaster Fiberglass Plastic MDF Cement Board. Use ¼ Torque of Hole Saw to Cut Twice As Fast

We use the 12" and 17" models as well but the X-230 has a smaller shield that fits between the TJI flanges better.

The LED light is very helpful at lining up a drill bit or a screw head. One of those things that is easy to take for granted until you go back to using a drill without the light.

The only way to make the Makita better would be to give it a rotating head. With the right angle head the screw needs to be driven at a 90 degree angle and if a different angle is needed then I have to go back to a regular drill.

The keyed chuck is not bad but the drill would be a lot better with a keyless chuck. It slows the work down when you have to pull up the cord and use the key to make a bit change and drill keys get knocked loose and have to be replaced. If I had to choose between two drills and only one had a keyless chuck that would always be my pick. Currently all the right angle corded drills use a key chuck even though their 3/8" and even some 1/2" corded counterparts from the same manufacturers are available with keyless chucks.

"Lots of power, fits in tight spaces" 2010-03-05

Great right angle drill. The built in light is nice. Power control is a bit touchy, a clutch would be a great addition. Overall, a tough, reliable tool.

 "Great close quarters drill" 2010-02-22
By Nunya Biznas (USA)
As with most others who bought this drill I picked it because it has the lowest clearance around. I'm not a plumpber looking to drill 5" holes through floor joists so I didn't need a monster drill.

I bought this drill to drill holes in my sill plate and foundation to install anchor bolts. My floor joists are only 2x8 so I needed this small drill because the other drills would barely fit without a drill bit. Even though this drill isn't designed for drilling concrete it worked great. Plenty of power with little 'kickback' when the drill bit binds.

The light is a great feature and is more helpful than I thought it would be. The drill is also excellent for driving screws in tight places thanks to the variable speed.

Need a right-angle drill? Then this is the one for you!

"Good but dual speed ranges, clutch, keyless chuck would help" 2010-02-17
By Peter Mitchell
I purchased this drill on the recommendation of a co-worker on a big project in Idaho where he is cutting 10" holes in I-joists for HVAC insulated duct runs and using this little 3 pound drill and a Hole Pro X-305 to cut the holes in the TJI. They started out using a 1/2" stud drill but quickly realized it was overkill and tiring to use overhead all day long so they switched to the Makita.

Hole Pro X-305 Kit 1-7/8" to 12" infinitely adjustable twin blade Tungsten Carbide Hole Saw Cutter 6" 7" 8" 9" 10" 11" 12" holes in wood drywall plaster fiberglass OSB cement board- Use ¼ torque of hole saws and cut twice as fast

With all drills having multi-speed range settings increases the range of jobs and allows for the use of the best torque range for each situation. For drilling in metal a high RPM is often best but for hole cutting or screw driving a lower RPM and more torque is better.

Having used the DeWalt and Milwaukkee drills with their self-tightening keyless chucks I have learned to avoid key chucks whenever possible as they are likely to loosen when cutting where any vibration is involved like with plywood or fiber cement board.

For driving screws it takes a deft touch and it would be better if instead of dual speed to be able to slow down the drill. For screws I prefer to grab a 18v cordless drill anyway.

Expect our next drill though will be one of the DeWalt 2-speed 3/8" 18 volt cordless right angle drills. Two speed settings makes a big difference and the smaller the drill the more important it becomes. Just waiting for DeWalt to release a kit with lithium-ion batteries.

"Makita DA3010F Right Angle Drill" 2010-02-05
By Alan Howeth (Houston, TX, USA)
This is a very nice piece of equipment. It is a bit expensive but it is truly a professional quality tool. The LED light is nice but not a necessity for my purposes. I live in an RV so there is not a lot of room to work in many cases and this drill makes those difficult to access areas a breeze to work in.

It would be nice if someone made a set of short drill bits to go along with it as many times the standard length bits are just too long to use.
